La Fortuna is located in the northern plains, and is home to the majestic Arenal Volcano, one of the most beautiful places in Costa Rica for its natural and geological wealth. Its volcanic thermal waters are rich in minerals associated with well-being, and it is one of the most visited places in the country, where you can relax and enjoy a unique natural setting in the middle of the rainforest, and the largest artificial lagoon in the country, the Arenal lagoon, located between beautiful forests and mountains.

The Arenal Volcano National Park covers an area of 12,124 hectares, and is located in the northwest region of Costa Rica, 15 kms. of La Fortuna. The park has several trails and viewpoints, which allow the observation of much of the flora and fauna of the area, as well as the remains of the lava flows. The park is considered a living laboratory due to its complexity in the development of biological processes, and it also contributes 70% of the water contained in the basin of the Arenal reservoir, the main source of hydroelectric energy in the country.

The Arenal volcano remained inactive for a long time, until in 1968 it made a strong eruption that caused the destruction of the villages at the foot of the volcano, and the death of many people. With a height ranging from 500 to 1,633 meters above sea level, the volcano stands out beautifully with an almost perfect conical shape, so it stands out from the rest of the other volcanoes in the country.

The park offers information for visitors, communications, sanitary services and drinking water. It is recommended to wear comfortable clothes and shoes for hiking (tennis or mountain shoes), and sunscreen.
