The Museum of Comayagua, considered a cultural heritage of Honduras, reopened last eastern following an investment of over 80,000 euros of restoration works. The project was led by the Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History (IHAH). The museum offers the public a fascinating tour through nine exhibition rooms illustrating the history of the Comayagua Valley, from pre-Hispanic archaeology to the colonial history of the ancient city, up to the present day. The city’s other notable museum is the Museum of Religious Art, which shows the importance of the Catholic Church in the country through the rich collection of colonial religious art that includes sculptures, tunics embroidered with gold thread and inlaid with emeralds and other jewellery. Comayagua is located in central Honduras and was, in colonial times, the country’s capital. Famous for its history, its countless museums, its exquisite gastronomy and the carpets of flowers and coloured sawdust that cover the streets and squares during Holy Week, it is one of the favourite places for national and international tourists.
