Different Central American traditions in December
What are the traditions in Central America during the Christmas season? While every country in the world experiences the month of December differently, the culture in this part of the world stands out. Find out more below.
Guatemala: the burning of the devil
In December in Guatemala the whole country dresses up to cast the devil into the flames. What is the tradition? They make devil figures to burn outside their houses, symbolizing cleansing from everything evil.
The most intriguing part is that these figures are made from old items or garbage. Therefore, by burning them they are also saying “goodbye” to the old and “hello” to the new.
Nicaragua: La Gritería (The Shouting)
In Nicaragua on December 7th there is also a very important celebration, but it is quite different than the one in Guatemala. This tradition has been around since 1857 to celebrate the Immaculate Conception. It is called “the shouting” because a shout is heard in the churches that goes like this: What causes so much joy? To that, everyone replies: Mary’s conception!
All over the country, the streets are filled with shouting, music and fireworks. Another tradition is visiting the altars made to Mary in people’s homes, where the hosts give gifts and food to visitors. It is without a doubt a unique experience.
El Salvador: new clothes to show off!
In El Salvador there is a very remarkable tradition. Almost everywhere in the world people get dressed up for Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve. But in this country they go a little further. Tradition dictates that you must buy new clothes, so during the days before these dates, markets and stores are filled with Salvadorans looking for the ideal clothes to wear while celebrating the holidays with their families. Fireworks displays on these two days are also a tradition.
Honduras: the Christmas herald
In Honduras there is a very curious Garifuna tradition. The Christmas herald, Warini, appears surrounded by singers and drummers and goes from house to house making the music play, because we all know that the songs of this season are one of the best ways to share moments.
Belize: music and color in the parades
With a perfect blend of Creole and Garifuna culture in Belize, the country is full of color and celebration. The Bram at Christmastime is a celebration where everyone dances and plays music in the streets. In fact, there are even small championships. It is a real party to say goodbye to the year.
